Thee European Summer School for Scientometrics (ESSS), one of the leading international training events on research evaluation and science metrics, was held in Granada from September 9–12, 2025. Organized by the University of Granada in collaboration with the University of Vienna, the program brought together experts, researchers, and professionals from across Europe to discuss emerging trends and methodologies in scientometrics.
Over the course of five intensive days, participants engaged in lectures, workshops, and case studies focusing on key areas such as research assessment frameworks, bibliometric indicators, open science policies, and the ethical dimensions of data use in research evaluation.
Several members of U^CHASS had the opportunity to attend the opening sessions of the summer school. The introductory panels were led by Nicolás Robinson and Elvira González, who offered participants a comprehensive overview of bibliometrics, its main concepts, and its relevance in the evaluation of scientific activity. Other members also had the chance to collaborate in the organization of the event. Victoria Di Césare and Sergio Castro Cortacero supported the Austrian organizing team by assisting with reception and event management, as well as providing support in supervising the practical exercises conducted by the invited lecturers.
The school featured several prominent figures in the field of bibliometrics, including Professor Wolfgang Glänzel, Professor Nicola De Bellis, and Professor Juan Gorraiz, who is also a member of the ESSS Scientific Committee. Thanks to the collaboration of Clarivate, Elsevier, and Digital Science, students had the opportunity to engage directly with representatives from these organizations, making the event a valuable networking platform.
After the presentation of the projects developed throughout the week, students had the opportunity to deepen their understanding of scientometric methods and their practical applications in research evaluation. The next edition of the European Summer School for Scientometrics (ESSS) will take place in early September 2026 in Leuven, Belgium, an event that is once again expected to offer an enriching and stimulating experience for all participants.
