Most aspects of generative AI are still subject to considerable uncertainty. As with climate change, it is nevertheless possible to assess the relative certainty of the uncertainties and thus commit to actions, both as we translate with genAI and as we train translators for a new technological workplace. This talk will explore several models of uncertainty management and relate them to research on automated translations of crisis messaging. Proposals will be made concerning ways to work with genAI and the language tasks for which we will still need trained professionals.
