This entertaining and easy-to-follow talk aims to shed light on the future of language professions in the era of Artificial Intelligence (AI). The presentation will be relevant to language professionals such as translators, interpreters, corpus linguists, and linguists in general.

The talk will begin by outlining the history of Natural Language Processing (NLP) and Machine Translation (MT), and how these disciplines have influenced specific language professions. Examples will be provided from various fields, including (but not limited to) Machine Translation, where the role of the translator has evolved dramatically over the last 30 years.

While it has long been acknowledged that NLP and MT technologies are inherently imperfect and far from achieving complete accuracy, recent advancements have significantly reshaped the field of language and translation technologies. First with Deep Learning methods, and now with Large Language Models (LLMs), the field has been revolutionised and has captured widespread attention across both academia and industry.

Based on these latest developments, the speaker will attempt to predict how language professions may evolve in the future. While not claiming prophetic insight, the speaker will draw on extensive experience and use linguistic intelligence as a benchmark to offer informed predictions about how artificial intelligence may develop in relation to human intelligence.
